I was hiking in a beautiful coastal National Park along California’s rugged Pacific coastline one day when I realized that I wasn’t fond of my job and needed to change the course of my life. As I sat on the top of a cliff looking out over the ocean, I realized that I was my happiest when I was outdoors in the natural world. A week later, I was a volunteer for the National Park Service. Within 6 months, I was enrolled in a conservation biology graduate program. And within a year, I was working under the head biologist at that very same national park.
I watched a PBS documentary one day on the Life of Ansel Adams, and heard the words that define his art. One of the speakers said that Ansel Adams was a true American Patriot. He loved the land of his country and worked very hard throughout his life to fight for the preservation of places like Yosemite National Park for all future generations to enjoy. He was an American patriot and a hero with a camera not a gun. It really made me think about how we define a hero in our world, and it saddens me that we idolize violence over art and nature.
As an environmentalist I cannot bring myself to use archaic film technology. So many chemicals polluting the environment in the production of photographs would be too great of an ethical dilemma for a nature photographer. That’s why I decided to go digital. Ansel Adams said that 80% of his photography was done in the darkroom. He was a pioneer in darkroom techniques and made great contributions to the idea of developing photography to express one’s artistic vision. So anyone who says that film is a more pure form of the art, isn’t giving you the whole picture. That being said, I am a purist in the digital darkroom as I never add things that were not there or delete things I wish hadn’t been.
